Spring Yoga for Kids

Yoga is increasing in popularity amongst school aged children. Yoga and mindfulness have been shown to promote mental and physical health. Practicing yoga helps improve strength, balance, and so much more! Below is a look into the positive impact implementing yoga can have on children’s wellbeing.

Yoga helps regulate children’s emotions: Yoga guides children on how to be present in the moment and practice a peaceful state of mind.

Body awareness and mindfulness: Yoga has a variety of poses and movements that help our children learn about their bodies and how they move. Yoga facilitates release and alleviates outside pressure (personal, parental, social).

Manage anxiety: Breathing and relaxing techniques can aid in stress management. Yoga practices help children find a way to reduce their stress in a healthy way. An important life skill for any human.

Strength + Flexibility: Slow movements and practicing breaths can increase blood flow and warms our muscles. All while holding a pose. Kids learn how to use their muscles in new ways.

Can Children Get Subluxations?

Subluxation: a misalignment of the vertebrae.

A question frequently asked at Total Health Chiropractic and the answer is yes! Chiropractic care is very safe for children of all ages. After a thorough consultation, a licensed chiropractor will create a plan based on findings with the patient and parents before beginning treatment. Any questions or concerns are answered.

This question can also be easily answered with a little more knowledge of the human body. Chiropractors focus on the spine and nervous system. The nervous system is made up of the brain, spine and spinal nerves. These spinal nerves coordinate and control every tissue, cell and organ in our bodies. Subluxations are the interference in messages that are transmitted between the body and nerves. These types of subluxations can occur at any age, for example childbirth.

Children can develop misalignments (subluxations) in their spine in many ways. Some include -childbirth, falls, sports injuries, hyperactivity, poor diet (sugary drinks, processed foods), stress in relationships and school, poor posture, etc.

Detecting these subluxations and eliminating them at a young age with chiropractic care allows children to develop and grow as healthy as possible. Our spines cannot function and develop if misalignments exist in the spine. Pressure and irritation on spinal nerves may result in a variety of symptoms and conditions.

At Total Health Chiropractic we strive to educate our patients on the benefits of chiropractic care for all ages.

Static vs. Dynamic Stretching

If you participate in physical activities, you’ve probably heard the importance of stretching. Stretching plays a critical role because it loosens the muscles, gets that heart rate up and helps prevent possible injury. Stretching after physical activity is also key. It helps remove lactic acid from muscles which helps our bodies recover quicker and alleviates the feeling of soreness. Two popular examples of stretching are Dynamic and Static stretching.

Dynamic Stretching: This involves actively moving our joints and muscles. This stretch is performed to get your body ready for physical activities. You target muscle groups you plan to use during your activity. This helps our body rehearse the movement and be ready to respond more quickly. Dynamic stretching elevates the heart, boosts metabolism, increases flexibility and gets blood pumping.

Examples of dynamic stretching: lunges, jumping jacks, high kicks, knee to chest, jump squats etc.

Static Stretching: This type of stretching is when you stretch the joint to the furthest place it can go and hold the position for a length of time. This stretch can also be done in repetition for around 10 seconds.

Examples of static stretching: Touching toes, calf stretch, hamstring stretch, upper back stretch, cobra pose

Tips For Safe Pumpkin Carving

  1. Make sure to keep your hands dry while carving. Slippery hands make more mistakes when handling sharp objects.
  2. Carve with the “lid” still on. This will ensure that you don’t make the mistake of cutting with your hands on the inside of the pumpkin. It’s much easier to stab yourself if your hand is on the inside of the pumpkin.
  3. Don’t let small children do any carving. Let them have their fun by taking the seeds out with their hands and getting a little messy.
  4. Make sure you have a sturdy and well lit area to work in.
  5. Don’t use actual candles on the inside, grab a battery powered one and avoid any unnecessary fire hazards.
  6. Last, don’t forget to have fun!
